DESCRIPTION: The primary feature of the Higganum Reservoir Dam project is the modifications and additions to the existing spillway to maintain current outflows without overtopping the dam. The historic nature of the old spillway presented a unique design challenge. Our goal was to maintain the existing structure coupled with repairs that not only meet the structural and hydraulic requirements, but also do not detract from its historic value and appearance. Additional repairs consist of seepage control, enhanced stability of the earthen dam, new drawdown facilities, and slope protection. The reservoir is intended to be used for recreation purposes. Therefore, vehicle access, parking, pedestrian walks, repair of a stone arched pedestrian bridge, and handicapped accessibility features are included in the project. Macchi Engineers completed the Phase II Study, design of dam and spillway, and the full-time, on-site construction administration and inspection.
