DESCRIPTION: This historic truss bridge was built in 1892 and currently serves as a pedestrian and bicycle path over the Farmington River for the residents of Simsbury. Macchi Engineers performed a complete condition study of the existing structure, which included the inspection of the trusses and floor deck. Additionally, Macchi Engineers completed the full rehabilitation of the bridge, including the structural design, and construction administration and inspection.
The project also included improvement plans for the bridge and surrounding area. These site improvements consist of: layout and landscaping of the east and west approaches (providing a park-like setting) brick pavers, benches, plantings, and a small parking area on the west side of the bridge. These site improvements provide an exciting location for viewing events on the river in addition to preserving this historical structure. This project received recognition in the 1996 CEPP Engineering Excellence Awards.
