A recently completed project, Above Pond Dam is a privately owned structure. The original dam was constructed in order to create a pond for a picnic area for a large estate. The dam and spillway were constructed of a combination of stone masonry and concrete with a concrete cap. Seepage was observed both from under the masonry spillway and through the eastern portion of the dam. A stone lined channel with a wooden pedestrian bridge is immediately downstream of the dam.
Macchi Engineers performed a thorough field investigation of the existing structure including a structural review of the dam and field survey. A report outlining the necessary repairs and associated costs was prepared. The proposed repairs included replacing the masonry spillway with concrete (including the use of formliner), crack and joint sealing and armoring the downstream channel with riprap. We prepared construction documents including design drawings, bid documents and technical specifications and obtained a CT DEP permit for the project. Macchi Engineers was also responsible for the construction administration, construction inspection, shop drawing review and the preparation of as-built drawings.
